In order to reduce the administrative burden on mobile workers, the EP has asked the EU Commission to draft a legislative proposal for the European social security card before the end of 2022. In a resolution adopted on November, 23rd, 2021, MEPs urged the European Commission to speed up the process requested in order to facilitate the portability of social security rights for mobile workers as soon as possible since the matter has been considered pressing. The ESSP would allow the real-time verification of the insurance and social security situation of mobile workers by the competent national authorities of the Member State in which they intend to work. This work and new legislation would also help fight social fraud and undeclared work and allow workers to easily track and claim their social security contributions and benefits. Specifically, the ESSP initiative is expected to bring clear benefits to all stakeholders and that is the aim of proposing a new draft. Mobile workers, businesses, employers, trade unions and national authorities; they all can benefit from a new and implemented regulation of the subject. At the same time, it should respect the diversity of national social security systems and not be a requirement to be able to exercise free movement.
