On June 2nd, 2021, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala addressed different issues relating to Least Developed Countries during a webinar that was dedicated to LDCs within the WTO’s Council for Trade in Services. In particular, according to the results of the webinar, the impact of the pandemic on LDCs export performance was important and the issue is now more urgent than ever. In the Director-General’s opinion, the Covid-19 outbreak has really decreased all the services in LDCs that require in-person contact between suppliers and consumers, and specifically the tourism and transport sectors. Director-General also stated that “Decreased export revenues mean job losses and economic distress for people, along with increased financial and debt pressures for governments,” she said. “Against this background, restoring and increasing the export performance of LDCs in services takes on even greater urgency.” And she added “Services can help LDCs increase and diversify exports from more traditional agricultural products and commodities, reducing exposure to price volatility.”
