On 4 December 2020, an agreement between the EU and the People’s Republic of China was published in the GUUE (L408I) to set precise rules for the protection of their respective protected geographical identification products, IGP. The main objective of the new agreement for thorough and effective customs cooperation is to ensure fair competition, in light of the increase in trade flows, through the provision of controls and verifications aimed at combating counterfeiting of goods. The agreement provides greater safeguards for Italian agri-food export companies to the Chinese market, considered one of the 4 pillars of Made in Italy, especially by contrasting the phenomenon of Italian Sounding, relating to the imitation of a product through a reference to its alleged Italian character.
