On 9 July 2020, the E.U. Court of Justice in the ruling in case C-343/19 confirmed that for the compensation of Volkswagen car buyers with harmful emission control software manipulated by the manufacturer it is possible to proceed with national cases, thus accepting the appeal of an Austrian consumer protection association which had filed a claim for damages of € 3.6 million before the Land Court for damages suffered by 574 consumers.
