On 21 June 2018 the Home Office issued a statement concerning the new program for European citizens resident in the United Kingdom. Although this program is still subject to the approval of the British Parliament, it is nevertheless a reliable guide on what are the plans for the management of immigration in the United Kingdom. European citizens who have been living in the UK for at least five years by exercising one of the rights under the treaty can apply immediately for settled status. Those who can not prove that they have resided in the UK continuously for at least five years may in the meantime request the so-called “pre-settled status”. Those who are already in possession of a permanent residence document will still have to request the settled status. The Home Office has also announced that the application process will be simple and entirely online and will be accessible from computers, tablets and smartphones through normal search engines.
