Parliament rejected a motion against the inclusion of gas and nuclear power among eco-sustainable economic activities. The European Parliament has not rejected the Commission’s delegated act on taxonomy which provides for the inclusion of specific energy activities of the gas and nuclear sectors in the list of eco-sustainable economic activities, included in the so-called EU taxonomy. An absolute majority of 353 Members would have been required to veto the Commission’s proposal. If Parliament and the Council do not object to the proposal by 11 July 2022, the delegated act on taxonomy will enter into force and will apply from 1 January 2023. The Commission believes that private investment can play a role in the green transition activities of the gas and nuclear sectors. It therefore proposed to classify some energy activities related to fossil gas and nuclear energy as transitional activities contributing to the mitigation of climate change. The inclusion of some of these activities is limited in time and depends on specific conditions and transparency requirements.
