After the outbreak of the Covid pandemic, there emerged an urge to solve the problem of guaranteeing an equitable access for all countries to vaccines in order to ameliorate the sanitary situation. On May 5th, 2021, in fact, the Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala stated that it is a real moral and economic issue and the WTO Chief specifically addressed the topic of intellectual property rights and equitable access to vaccines in the world; this is a real difficult subject with reference to a pandemic outbreak. Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala further explained that “The way the WTO handles this matter is critical, We need to have a sense of urgency on how we approach this issue of response to COVID-19 because the world is watching. […] Vaccine policy is economic policy because the global economic recovery cannot be sustained unless we find a way to get equitable access to vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics”. At the end of the meeting of the General Council, there was no unanimous consensus on the matter but all members agreed on the urgence and importance of the critical situation.
