In order to help developing countries and least developed countries (LDCs) build an academic system that is up to date for what concerns trade policy, international trade economics, international relations and international economic law, in 2021 the government of Austria decided to endow 200,000 euros to the Global Trust Fund for the implementation of the so-called WTO Chairs Programme. The goal of the programme was indeed from the beginning to launch trade research in LDCs in order that they may have different institutional entities and subjects that can wisely advise the governments on issues related to trade policy and international business and economics. Since the launch of the Programme ten years ago, the WTO has provided financial support to 19 institutions in countries across Africa, Asia and South and Central America in the form of yearly grants of up to CHF 50,000 per chair for a maximum of four years. Furthermore, in December 2020, the WTO decided to start an initiative with a call for applications for what was planned as the Programme’s new phase. Deputy Director-General Yonov Frederick Agah, said: «Austria’s contribution is very welcome. It will pave the way for facilitating new research and policy advice to help policymakers in developing countries and LDCs develop trade-related strategies to boost export opportunities and further their countries’ integration into the global economy».
