The WTO has now published a new webpage with specific focus on the relation between trade and natural disasters and with the aim to provide WTOs countries with all the research material that is needed to assess strategies to recover from such disasters and to provide preventive measures. This webpage was first thought and commissioned by the WTO in 2018, during its first symposium in April, and such research was funded by the Permanent Mission of Australia. The initial idea of this research was to provide a better awareness of the connections between international trade and natural disasters, with an interesting assessment of the needed infrastructures to overcome crisis for the participating countries; furthermore, it was deemed fundamental to provide a specific case studies on WTO countries. In the end, the research resulted in two studies carried out by the WTO Secretariat and by Giovanna Adinolfi, Professor of International Law at the University of Milan, Italy, who maintained: “With the number and economic burden of natural disasters growing, building appropriate legal frameworks consistent with known risks would help governments strengthen resilience and reduce vulnerabilities to such shocks. My analysis suggests that many tools are available for disaster-affected economies and their trading partners across WTO agreements, such as those covering trade in goods, trade in services and trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights.”
