On November 28th, 2019, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the EU’s securities regulator, published its latest report on risks for the European Union’s securities markets which was concerned with the third quarter of 2019. In accordance with what was stated in said report, the market risks are still very high, against the background of a deteriorating growth outlook, even in relation to uncertainty around Brexit, US-China trade tensions and geopolitical risk. Risks in markets under ESMA’s remit remained high, particularly in securities markets, where high asset valuations and search-for-yield prevail. The main concern is that future perspectives do not see European securities markets as more credible and specifically, according to ESMA’s report, it is possible to foresee a weakening economic outlook and further uncertainty over global trade negotiations.
