The economic sanctions against Russia for the situation in Ukraine will remain in place until July 31st, 2018. On December 21st, 2017, the EU Council formalized the decision to extend the restrictions for other six months, after reports by French President Emmanuel Macron at the European summit on December 14th. President Macron and German chancellor Angela Merkel - guarantors, in the so-called ‘Normandy format’ of the agreement signed by Moscow and Kiev to end the conflict in the predominantly Russian-speaking region in Eastern Ukraine - have informed the other EU partners that the full implementation of the Minsk protocol is still far away. On March 19th, 2015, the European Council decided to link the duration of the sanctions to the full implementation of the agreement signed in the Belarusian capital. Implementation was expected by December 31st, 2015, but that always remained on paper only. Thus, the formalized decision extends the sanctions initially introduced for other six months at least until July 31st, 2018 and further renewable. The restrictions concern only certain specific sectors, such as finance, energy, defence and civil and military dual-use goods.
