EU funding will help to quickly bring Internet access to areas where it is not currently available. More than 7000 municipalities will have internet, for a total of about 13 million inhabitants and companies. Corina Creþu, Commissioner for Regional Policy, said that the EU-funded broadband project means unprecedented business opportunities, better public services and better quality of life for the Italian people. Mariya Gabriel, commissioner for the economy and the digital society, said that a high quality broadband infrastructure is essential for today’s economy and society. The project is part of the “Italian digital plan - Ultra-broadband”, the national strategy for the new generation access network that aims to guarantee connection speeds of at least 100 megabits per second (Mbps) for 85% of families Italians, and at least 30 Mbps for all by 2020. In particular, the project will involve the so-called “white areas”, in which market forces cannot provide the necessary infrastructure upgrade, in all 20 Italian regions. The project should be completed by the end of 2020.
